Transform Your Wardrobe, Keep What You Love

For everyday clients with a sentimental or ill-fitting garment they want reimagined rather than replaced.

Can I update the style of a dress or suit I already own instead of buying something new?

Garment Restyling is the service for clients who want to reimagine a piece they already own, updating its cut, adding or removing details, or transforming its silhouette to suit a new occasion or current style. It's the ideal choice when a garment holds sentimental or practical value but no longer fits the wearer's life or look.

Smart Fit Tailoring & Design is a boutique tailoring and dressmaking studio based in Melbourne CBD, and garment restyling is one of its most personal services. A dated formal gown can be reshaped into something contemporary, a wedding dress can be reworked into a shorter, wearable piece for future occasions, and everyday garments that no longer suit your style can be given a fresh silhouette rather than being retired to the back of the wardrobe. Whatever the starting point, the process begins with an honest conversation about what the fabric and construction can support, followed by design decisions made together, so the result feels considered rather than compromised. Restyling is, at its heart, about extending the life of pieces that matter, without asking you to settle for something that no longer feels like you.

Over 25 years of industry experience — decades of hands-on tailoring and dressmaking work applied to every restyling project.

Certificate IV in Apparel and Fashion — formal, credentialed training in garment construction and design.

Australian Masters of Fashion Award, 2007 — award recognition from the Australian fashion industry.

How a Restyling Project Comes Together

A restyling project moves through six steps, from consultation to collection.

  1. Book a consultation to discuss your garment and restyling vision.
  2. Bring in the piece for an in-studio assessment of fabric, structure, and possibilities.
  3. Collaborate with naning to agree on the new design direction and any new details or cuts.
  4. Alterations and restyling work is carried out with couture-level hand-finishing where required.
  5. A fitting is scheduled to review the transformed garment on the client.
  6. Final adjustments are made and the finished piece is ready for collection.

Restyling timeframes vary by complexity, with simpler updates completed faster and structural or couture-level transformations taking longer. A realistic estimate is given at consultation.

The studio serves clients across Melbourne VIC 3000 and surrounding areas, based at Suite 5, Level 8/365 Little Collins St.

Restyling typically starts from $90 — an exact quote is provided after the garment is assessed in person during a consultation.

What Affects the Cost of a Restyling Project

Restyling pricing depends on the scope of the transformation rather than a flat rate.

  • Extent of design change (simple detail updates vs. full silhouette reconstruction)
  • Fabric type and condition
  • Whether couture-level hand-finishing is required
  • Number of fittings needed to perfect the result

Garment Restyling Questions

  • What kinds of garments can be restyled?

Almost any garment can be considered for restyling, from dated formal wear and wedding dresses to everyday pieces that no longer suit your style or fit. During your consultation, naning will assess the fabric condition and construction to advise what transformations are realistically achievable. The goal is always to honour the piece while giving it a fresh, wearable new life.
  • How is restyling different from a standard alteration?

A standard alteration adjusts fit, taking in a seam, hemming a length, and so on. Restyling goes further by changing the design itself: reshaping a silhouette, updating a neckline, adding or removing sleeves, or reworking a garment into something entirely new. It draws on the same tailoring and dressmaking skills but with a stronger creative and design focus.
  • How long does a restyling project take?

Timeframes vary depending on how complex the transformation is, but you'll receive a realistic estimate at your initial consultation. Simpler restyling work is naturally quicker, while projects that involve significant structural changes or couture-level finishing will take longer to complete properly. Smart Fit prioritises quality and attention to detail over rushed turnaround times.
  • Do I need to know exactly what I want before I come in?

Not at all, bringing an open mind and the garment itself is enough to get started. naning is known for patient, collaborative consultations and can help you explore what's possible based on the fabric, your lifestyle, and your personal style. If you have inspiration images or a general direction in mind, those are always welcome too.
